A historical moment, a great day for the community of Neuhof and the entire Fulda region - easthessisan Route 66, an example of German engineering or building of the century: with terms like these the prominent speakers from federal, state and district authorities outlined the importance of the closure of Autobahn 66 between junctions Neuhof-South and Neuhof-North during the official opening to traffic.
The most important part of the 3.5-kilometer route section is the 1.600 meters long tunnel Neuhof. The tube made of concrete and steel will take the through traffic. Thus, the A 66 motorway junction between the Fulda in the east and Frankfurt / Main is consistently passable.
For the citizens of Neuhof it was mostly a day of festival character, where they could visit the new underground structure and traverse on foot or by bike. They hope that the Tunnel will improve to the quality of life: Fewer vehicles passing through the village and thus less noise, emissions, congestion and accidents.
For the employees involved in the construction, it was primarily a long-standing and most ambitious building project in which literally mountains had to be moved and railway lines and the Bundesstraße 40 had to be relocated. Even divers were called in to establish the foundation bed under water and concrete the tunnel floor.
