Construction of landfill sites

The former household waste landfill of the City of Fulda located close to Eichenzell-Löschenrod, which was classified as contaminated land, was remediated. Employees of the Bickhardt Bau Fulda branch, in cooperation with an ARGE partner, constructed a mineral sealing. For this purpose, a cohesive soil which was especially prepared was installed in two layers with a thickness of 25 centimetres each. The optimal water content of the clay-like material was particularly important in this regard. Fields of approximately 2000 square metres were partitioned off where this clay-like material was shaped section-by-section. Afterwards the landfill site construction specialists installed a drainage mat which was finally covered by a 1.50-metre thick recultivation layer.

About 490,000 cubic metres of waste are stored at the landfill site which was originally used as sand pit. At the beginning of the site remediation of this contaminated land, the layer of waste was partially reshaped and covered by a 50-centimetre thick base and levelling layer as well as a 30-centimetre thick shaping protection layer. It was only then that the mineral sealing was professionally constructed as a sort of middle layer under the constant supervision by in-house monitoring and supervising authorities. Altogether 300,000 cubic metres of soil were moved during the building project.

The A 98 Hochrhein motorway is Germany's southernmost motorway. It runs in east-west direction between the three-leg motorway interchange of Weil on the Rhine close to Lörrach and Singen on the shores of Lake Constance. In the immediate vicinity to the Rappenstein tunnel, Bickhardt Bau AG was awarded the contract for the construction of another, 900- metre long construction lot comprising earthworks and covering work. The special feature is as follows: In the area of the route section, a former household waste landfill was located which needed to be dismantled in the course of the motorway expansion.

Soil samples taken in the preparatory stage of the building project did not provide any indication for contaminant loads. However, as a precautionary measure, a protection area was established according to the black-and-white-principle. The waste storage facility with a capacity of 90,000 tonnes was dismantled layer by layer. Unpolluted soil was transported to the areas where the embankment was heaped up, and was used as fill material there. Contaminated material was professionally disposed of and deposited. After excavating the landfill masses, the former landfill body was professionally sealed by means of bentonite mats, before the new construction of the motorway embankment was started.
