Railway construction

The previous railway route of the Hambach railway has passed through the mining area of Hambach over a distance of approximately 9 km so far. In 2014, this route will be occupied by an open pit mine. This railway route needed to be relocated to the south to be able to continue to use it. The new route runs parallel to the A 4n motorway which still needs to be constructed and the Deutsche Bahn route of Cologne – Aachen. The entire length of the Hambach railway which needed to be relocated was approximately 15 kilometres.

In order to reduce emissions that arise from the transport of the brown coal from the open pit mine to the power plants, such as dust and noise emissions, to a minimum, the new double-track railway route was constructed into an 8 to 15 metres deep cut. Almost six million cubic metres of soil needed to be moved for this building project.

The new railway route of Erfurt – Leipzig/Halle is designed as electrified, standard-gauge, double-track railway route for high-quality passenger and goods traffic. Its total length is 123 kilometres. ARGE Bickhardt Bau AG/Bickhardt Bau Thüringen has been entrusted with the construction of the track up to the lower edge of the Slab Track in the area of the section lot 4, Mücheln / Querfurt Plate.
 

The section lot is 20.5 kilometres long and is located between the rail kilometres 251.510 and 272.093. The order volume comprises underground cable laying, paths parallel to the railway track, drainage systems including rainwater storage reservoirs, earthwork structures, civil engineering structures, an accompanying landscape conservation plan, superstructure works for a branch line, as well as the adjustment of the telecommunication facilities of the branch line.

The route section between Glauchau-Schönbörnchen and Gößnitz which was modernised by Bickhardt Bau and Bickhardt Bau Thüringen in an ARGE is ten kilometres long. Since the timetable change in December 2011, the trains have no longer been required to run at a travel speed of merely 80 kilometres per hour, but they have been able to run at 110 km/h on the modernised single-track railway line. Since that time, trains with tilting technology have been able to run at a travel speed of even 140 kilometres per hour on the last section of the so-called Mitte-Deutschland-Bahnverbindung, i.e. the rail connection of Central Germany, which runs from Chemnitz to Paderborn.

After the dismantling of the old installations, first the formation level was constructed, together with the formation protective layer. Afterwards the track bed was ballasted with gravel. Additionally, the deep drainage was modernised. Centre piece of the building measures was the modification of the 1100-metre long route section in the area of the Meerane railway station. The location of the railway track was modified (gradient and axis) in this area, new platforms were constructed and the overpass structure of Brüderstraße was newly built. The job task also comprised the renovation of the outer face of a pedestrian tunnel. For this purpose, it was necessary to excavate the surrounding soil to a depth of 12 metres. Furthermore, four support walls were renovated and noise barriers were erected.
