The transport infrastructure of the Federal Republic of Germany is characterised by a dense network of more than 630,000 kilometres of federal, country, district and local roads. This network requires permanent maintenance and improvement.
Bickhardt Bau's decades of experience are reflected in the construction of new four-lane federal roads, the renewal of country road surfaces or also in the shaping of village centres that are typical of their local areas. Bypasses, connecting roads, petrol stations and roadhouses, pedestrian areas, cycle paths and paved areas are also part of the daily business of the group of companies.
Bickhardt Bau AG renovated the B 454 cross-town link in Kirchheim from scratch, in altogether eight stages of construction. This very busy local road did no longer withstand the permanent exposure to heavy trucks. Potholes, cracks and deformations characterised the appearance of the street scene. The complete renovation of the about 1.6-kilometre long main road, together with the motorway approach roads, took mostly place on one side of the road at a time, while the traffic was guided and controlled with traffic lights on the other side.
In the course of the building project, 20,000 square metres of asphalt and 7,000 square metres of paved area were constructed, 3,500 metres of kerbs and gutters were installed and 1,200 metres of channel and 4,000 metres of water pipe were laid. Furthermore, 1,500 metres of data and telecommunication cables and all house service connections of all public utilities were renovated. One special feature of this building project is that almost the entire channel with a diameter between DN 300 and DN 1000, up to three water pipes, as well as telecommunication and power supply cables, are located next to each other and on top of each other in the two-metre wide footpath.
Earthworks:
8,500 m2 of soil were detached, soil class 3 – 5
Road construction:
20,000 m2 of asphalt covering layer
2,700 m of two-row cobblestone gutter
6 traffic islands were demolished and newly built
7,000 m2 of road surface made of cobbles, 20/10/8, including substructure, were constructed
3,500 linear metres of kerbs
2 bus stop shelters were constructed
Canalisation:
4,435 m of HDPE pipe, diameter DN 100 - 800
3,000 m of drainage, diameter DN 150
6,000 m of ductwork for cables
1,500 m of data and telecommunication cable in ductwork, diameter DN 80
The original L 1015 country road ran from Mühlhausen in northern direction through the localities of Rüdigershagen, Niederorschel and Gernrode to the road link to the L 3080 (formerly B 80) to the southeast of Worbis. The traffic volume on the cross-town links is considerably reduced due to the construction of this new route. The new, eight-kilometre long bypass leads into the L 1014 to the south of the A 38 federal motorway close to Breitenworbis.
Since some road sections pass through the drinking water protection zone III, drainage takes place by means of a light fluid separator and five rainwater storage reservoirs. Above the locality of Rüdigershagen, on the foothills of Dün, the route passes through an area which is prone to the formation of sinkholes. Therefore, special protective measures in the form of geosynthetic reinforcement were necessary in the embankment area. Another special feature is the following: A special slope stabilisation made of plastic reinforced earth was additionally installed over a length of 250 metres.
Earthworks:
150,000 m3 of soil movement
Road construction:
approximately 65,000 m2 of asphalt surface
Drainage:
4,160 linear metres of drainpipes
5 rainwater storage reservoirs
Miscellaneous:
400 linear metres of sinkhole protection made of geotextile reinforcement for embankment toe
250 linear metres of slope stabilisation made of plastic reinforced earth

Closure of the gap at B 54 close to Steinfurt: Due to the upgrade of the 5300-metre long route section close to Steinfurt, the important east-west route between Münster and Enschede in the Netherlands has become a three-lane federal road over its entire length, designed for the 2+1 type of traffic. The special feature is as follows: A proportion of the material was excavated by a dredger from a forest lake, and was pumped through a flushing line made of 30-centimetre thick PE pipe to the construction site of the route section. At the construction site, the water/sand mixture flowed into a settling pit in which the heavy sand particles deposited. The water was pumped back into the lake.
The employees of Bickhardt Bau AG who constructed the upgraded road section by order of the state roadbuilding agency of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, moved altogether 250,000 cubic metres of soil. Another 60,000 square metres of anti-freeze formation level were milled using the so-called mixed-in-place method, and were stabilised with cement to form a hydraulically bound base layer. During the construction of the asphalt covering layers, 25,000 tonnes of asphalt base layer, 15,000 tonnes of asphalt binder and 7,500 tonnes of stone mastic asphalt were installed. Two junctions, one traffic circle and two rainwater storage reservoirs were also constructed in the course of the road section upgrade.
Earthworks:
65,000 m3 of topsoil work
216,000 m3 of soil were detached
264,000 m3 of soil were installed
Construction of the route section:
3,400 m2 of asphalt pavement were removed
40,000 m3 of anti-freeze layers
71,000 m2 of asphalt base layer
70,600 m2 of asphalt binder
Civil engineering:
2 stormwater sedimentation tanks, built as solid construction, as rectangular tank with a tank capacity of 51m3 or 60 m3
